Our mission at Lewis & Clark Preschool Academy is to nurture the spirit and curiosity of each child. We encourage our children’s desire to explore, cultivate their minds to discover, and inspire them to create. We promote independence, self confidence, and respect for others in a peaceful and loving environment while encouraging the growth of the whole child. Our focus is to inspire life-long learning in all children and to enable them to fully develop their unique capacities.

Our philosophy is play based, child-centered learning. Our curriculum weaves together the arts, academics, movement, and character development with a reverence for the developing child. We believe children are active learners, explorers, experimenters and artists and benefit from a wide variety of educational opportunities.

Gentle guidance provided by our teachers reinforces Christian values including love, respect, and reverence for all of God’s creations. Our goal is to help develop a child’s character, creativity, practical life skills, and academic ability through many hands-on learning experiences and discoveries.

Our program encourages creative, hands-on group exploration to generate a strong inner enthusiasm for learning. Our overriding focus is nourishing their imagination and curiosity while developing children’s innate abilities and talents. We strive to inspire children’s natural desire to learn and help lay the foundation for a lifelong love of exploration, discovery, and creation.

At Lewis & Clark Preschool Academy, the children work in groups and independently at their own pace in a hands-on learning environment. Throughout the year we explore language development, literacy knowledge and skills. We learn math readiness skills and number recognition. We encourage social and emotional development. We discover the world through scientific exploration. We dive into creative arts and free expression.

The curriculum we use has been collected from many different educational resources and philosophies over the years.

We implement many of the Montessori methods including our carefully prepared classroom. Our classroom is scaled to child size and is simply organized. It includes academic toys that encourage language art, math, cultural arts, puzzles, sensorial area with a sensory bin, and reading spot with a variety of books. These areas are filled with easily accessible educational materials and self-correcting toys. This encourages children to freely explore and work independently allowing skill mastery and the joy of self-discovery.

Adopting aspects of Stein Rolf’’s Waldorf education, we indulge in the arts daily. We explore themes and ideas throughout the year using color, paints, crayon, clay, glue, and scissors. Our “Creation Station” invites children to explore their imaginations utilizing recycled materials to create! We examine the beauty, color, and art in nature.

We savor aspects of traditional preschool fun in our large movement activities and singing time. We love to be silly, hold hands, and gather for a game of Duck, Duck, Goose! We love running, jumping, and laughing!

We approach the opportunity to teach our children with gratitude and enthusiasm! We treasure each personality that comes through our doors and delight in the time we have to spend helping them expand their minds.
